"Mountain Laurel Rhododendrons Spring Gala" Auction!

"Mountain Laurel Rhododendrons Spring Gala" 6 X 8" by C. Twomey

From the garden this spring. Painted live, these mountain laurels and rhododendrons were having a gala event of blues, pinks and greens. The painting is 6 X 8" on archival linen board, unframed.

Art is my life. From the first art project I can remember (making a Christmas Nativity scene in grade school that overshadowed the resident artist) art has always been what brings me the greatest satisfaction. Without art, I am not who I am.
I am now working full time as a fine artist, a dream that I've pursued for as long as I remember. Landscapes engage and challenge me, and I have a very soft spot for animals (that's me with Rosie the thoroughbred, left).

My artwork has been featured at the world renowned TED (Technology, Education and Design) conference (TED MED in San Diego, on huge high definition screens throughout the exhibition center). I recently won the nationally acclaimed ArtInPlace competition in Virginia which placed a 12' X 24' mural on aluminum of my work, now seen by thousands of commuters daily.

Two museums currently house my art: The William H. Benton Museum in Connecticut, and The LLoyd Museum in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was a great honor to be asked to exhibit and I continue to add to their collections. Speaking of collections, my work is a part of hundreds of private collections worldwide.

As a passionate defender of Artist's Rights, I have traveled to Washington, DC to meet with Senators and members of Congress as they debated the Orphan Works law (an attempt to "orphan" copyrighted artwork by separating the creator from their work) which we defeated. In addition, as a member of the American Society of Illustrator's Partnership, I continue to work to secure reprographic royalty streams from the ongoing publication of artist's works.

I have studied with some of the greatest artistic and scientific minds in the world: fellow medical illustrators. Leonardo da Vinci is considered the first medical illustrator, and his knowledge, technical abilities and deep curiosity are benchmarks for the field.

As a Board Certified Medical Illustrator, I have had the privilege to know and learn directly from some of the most extraordinarily talented, smart and influential visionaries living today.

Fine art influencers include Georgia O'Keefe, Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt and Degas. I look to their struggles and triumphs, and their unflinching persistence.

Spring is irresistible. The light, warming, buds, birds - all for the taking. So I took.

I'm painting real things from my real life. This practice slows me down, is calming, creative and allows time to absorb the beauty in the world. Dog walks everyday put me in contact with places and things I wouldn't ordinarily pay much attention to, which is a very good thing. I'm selling my work on eBay because it's a trusted place for transactions like this, and because it offers everyone an equal opportunity to purchase my work.

"The Biltmore Boat House" on Auction, C. Twomey

This original oil painting is on auction at eBay HERE:

The Painting
This original oil painting by Catherine Twomey was painted at the incredible Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC, USA. It was painted en plein air (outside) on a windy day in early spring of 2017. When I look at it, I am taken back to the day when the greens were so bright and the light had such a sheen of early spring. It was painted alla prima, meaning "in one sitting" and is 8"H X 6"W, unframed.

The Boat House is located on the gorgeous Bass Pond at the Biltmore. I was drawn to it because of my previous studies of the art of Japan, with it's oriental flavor and lovely landscaping. Frederick Olmsted, the famous landscape architect who designed Central Park, also designed the stunning landscapes of the Biltmore. At the height of the Biltmore's operation as a private family residence (the Vanderbilts) in the late 1800s and early 1900s, guests would walk to the Boat House to enjoy the sunsets after a day of revelry.

The organic symmetry of this gorgeous apple tree drew me in. I watched it daily while in Vermont; the apples hadn't arrived yet but it was in full summer bloom. The light filtered it softly as it dominated the landscape. Many animals depended upon it for shelter and food! It's oriental bend in the trunk was unique and set the tone for the rest of the limbs. 14" X 11" on archival paper.

An evocative still life with nods to the past and present. As the EPA is dismantled by an illegitimate president, many want to know the secret. Nature hangs in the balance; but what is the key? Oil on canvas, 12 X 16" in gold frame, highly detailed and rendered, embedded in a gold box frame and ready to hang.

Found this rich alizarin-red organic, homegrown onion in Vermont. It was huge! I loved everything about it, including it's personality. Added a lot to a salad, too.

Plein Air Oil Painting, The Biltmore Estate

Oil painting by C. Twomey
Bass Pond (L) and the Biltmore Bridge by C. Twomey, ©2017

Had a fantastic time painting at the gorgeous Biltmore Estate in Asheville on Friday. Oh what a day! The wind was way up for the first painting of the bridge (on the right). I had to hang on to everything just to operate at all!

For the second painting, left, I hiked to the Boat House on Bass Pond. Here, I was sheltered from the wind and spent a good couple of hours quietly drawing, painting and talking to some lovely people who happened by.

Going to do a lot more of this! A peaceful, productive meditation in doing what makes one happy.

Driving along Buck Mountain road as the sun was starting to head down, I pulled off the road as I had to get this sight down. The most stunning view of the day - the vines, the mist in the Blue Ridge mountain valley's, the way the sun blasted the foliage. No wonder I love this place - has brought great peace and happiness.

"Advance Mills Hay Bales" C. Twomey

Thank you to the collector of this painting, your interest is greatly appreciated! For additional information, please click HERE.

Along Advance Mills Road is an area of large hayfields, usually right next to the cattle the hay will feed. These fields look out onto the Blue Ridge Mountains, but this time what caught my eye were the bales themselves. The patterns of bright sun with contrasting shadows as the sun fell were stunning.

"Milkpod Bursts" Auction, Twomey Oil Painting

Oil painting by Catherine Twomey
"MilkPod Bursts" by C. Twomey, 8 X 10" oil on linen board

Auction currently in progress at Daily Paintworks.
One of those unforgettable, golden days of fall in Vermont; or everywhere. At the end of the garden, in front of a field of grasses was a proud milk pod. It had just released it's seed treasure and the backdrop of the gorgeous trees was irresistible. It was a still, warm, sunny day and I was able to paint for hours to capture the details. There was a light mist over the distance mountains and the trees were at their peak. This is almost a still life combined with a landscape that serves as a document of time standing still.

Thank you for your interest!

oil painting by Catherine Twomey
"Vermont Back Forty" by C. Twomey, 5 X 7" oil
Visit dailypaintworks.com to place a bid for this original art at a very affordable price.

I was in the Rochester, Vermont area in the fall of 2016, staying at my brother's house. We trekked cross country from Danville, CA and needed a respite. A respite it was, as I was able to paint outside in the peace and quiet, staring at this gorgeous view in the warmth of August and September. This oil is on archival linen board. It is 5 X 7", signed and varnished with care.
